Possibility distribution: a new mathematical tool to express measurement uncertainty

Alessandro Ferrero, Marco Prioli, Simona Salicone
Abstract:
In the last years, the Authors have proposed the Theory of Evidence as the mathematical framework to handle measurement uncertainty, and the possibility distribution as the mathematical variable to represent it. The mathematical Theory of Evidence is more general than the well known probability theory and appears to be more suitable to represent all possible kinds of uncertainty contributions. The aim of this paper is to give a general overview of this theory, showing its potentialities and the obtained results.
