THE AGING OF REFERENCE MEASUREMENT STANDARDS AND THE EXPERIENCE OF KENYA BUREAU OF STANDARDS

Abstracts: The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) is a National Standards Body (NSB), set up in 1974 by an Act of Parliament, the Standards Act, Chapter 496 of the Laws of Kenya. It is a statutory organization of the Government with overall responsibility for standardization and all matters concerning Metrology, Standards, Testing and Quality Assurance (MSTQ).
One of the functions of KEBS as spelt out in Section 4(1)(b) of the Standards Act is ”to make arrangements or provide facilities for the testing and calibration of precision instruments, gauges and scientific apparatus, for the determination of their degree of accuracy by comparison with standards approved by the Minister on the recommendation of the Council, and for the issue of certificates in regard there to.”
KEBS discharges this function through its Metrology Division, which acts as the custodian of the national measurement standards and also offers calibration services to industry, commerce and the scientific community either directly or through the National Calibration Service (NCS).
